Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a condition of “complete physical, mental and social wellness and not just the absence of illness and infirmity”. Different definitions have been applied over time for many different purposes. For example, it has been said that health is the sum total of the good health practices, which includes cleanliness, hygiene, self-respect, social support, and the like. The definition also mentions that good health depends on the person’s attitudes and values, and his ability to make choices for himself, and to choose the kind of health that he needs. Thus, in order to attain health, one must first be healthy spiritually and socially.

According to the third definition, health is a state of complete well being in which all three components of health are simultaneously present. The first component of this definition is the absence or the resolution of diseases, which could be psychological, physical or social. The second component is the control and prevention of diseases, which could be either physical or mental. The third component is the treatment and rehabilitation of patients, who have either been victims or beneficiaries of diseases. The term disease has various meanings, depending on the area of study and on the culture of the people using it.

Some diseases may be physical in nature and can be prevented and treated, while other diseases may not be curable and may require extensive medical intervention, either surgical or non-surgical. According to the first and second definitions, health is a state in which all the three components of health are necessarily present, although in varying degrees. The absence or resolution of diseases is not considered to be equivalent to health. Indeed, the absence or resolution of a physical disease may itself be an indication of a physical disorder or illness, whereas the absence or resolution of a mental or emotional disease may itself indicate a mental disorder or illness.

The human body needs food to survive, but food can also be dangerous to the body if it is not well-planned, contains unwanted additives, preservatives or unhealthy fats. Vegetable and fruit proteins are made up of amino acids that help maintain and repair tissue. Animal proteins are rich in amino acids and are used by the body for protein, energy, and digestive system support.

The fiber content of a food, or more accurately, the total dietary fiber of a food, is the measurement most commonly used to determine its carbohydrate value. Foods that are low in carbohydrates are called “fiber-rich” and foods that are high in carbohydrates are classified as “fiber-free.” Foods with a high fiber content are generally low in fat and calories, while foods that are low in fat and calories are high in carbs. Therefore, the ideal type of food energy is one that is high in carbs (low in fats) while having little or no fat.

The human diet contains about 70% of its total calories; carbohydrates make up another percentage and fats a smaller percentage.

Health can also mean having strong muscles, an attractive appearance, a good health condition in general. Some people may consider these things luxuries but they are definitely important to people who want to lead a healthy lifestyle.

People who are living a healthy life are less likely to develop chronic illnesses or sicknesses such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, asthma, allergies, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and osteoporosis. They are less likely to develop certain cancers or acquire gum or oral cavities or kidney disease. And they are less likely to get colds and coughs or to be sick with viral or bacterial infections. These people are less likely to have psychiatric or behavioral disorders or to experience major changes in their health status. People who are living a healthy lifestyle are less likely to become depressed, less likely to abuse alcohol or drugs, and less likely to engage in risky behaviors like smoking. In short, people who are healthy are happier, healthier, and more successful in life than those who are living unhealthy lifestyles.

The promotion of public health has resulted in many health improvements; there are more clinics offering vaccinations, more doctors and nurses practicing preventive care, and more people suffering from serious diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are being treated. In addition, the improved public health has resulted in less death and injury from serious illnesses and accidents. More people live longer and healthier lives than ever before. This is all due to the public health efforts of the United States and other wealthy countries.
