A designer is someone who carefully plans the shape or structure of something in advance, before it is even made, by drawing or models. In theory, any person who designs tangible or intangible items, products, procedures, systems, laws, structures, games, images, services, or concepts can also be called a designer. In this capacity, a designer’s job description may overlap that of an architect or draftsman. In the design process, a designer will often collaborate with other staff members or even use several teams of people in order to achieve the desired results. Many designers work alone in their own offices, but others find that it’s much easier to work with a team of people.

In addition to working on actual projects, designers can find themselves involved in numerous different types of businesses, as well as working with individuals or teams to complete various jobs. For instance, a graphic designer might be employed by a company that was planning to launch a new product, but needed some illustrations to put into the promotional campaign. Instead of hiring an artist, the company decided to commission a designer, who in turn presented them with several different types of models and illustrations to choose from, all representative of the final product that would be launched.

Designers are found in many fields, including business, architecture, engineering, printing, television, and even in the healthcare field, where they are sometimes called interior designers or decorators. Designers have developed a great deal of skill through time, and their work is seen around the world in a variety of ways, representing the quality of creativity that goes into the designs. Although the principal designer may be responsible for the initial concept and planning of the project, secondary designers are often involved, performing tasks such as conceptualizing a layout, researching materials, choosing colors, and finalizing the look and feel of the project. Interior designers are generally found in building complexes or private homes, doing work that allows people to fully integrate their interior design with technology, style, and function.
