Real Food Vs Unprocessed Food

What is food? Food is any material consumed to supply nutrition to an organism. The term food is generally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and usually contains various necessary nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, or even minerals. Plants contain food as part of their growth and development, while animals consume food to sustain life, although some types of fungus may not need food to survive, but rather utilize living matter such as cellulose to produce food.

Each plant contains several substances that are necessary for growth, development and nutrition, while animals contain various substances that enable them to live and perform their functions. Plants get their nutrients from light, while animals get theirs primarily from food. Animals, however, do contain one food source: fat. Fats are a source of energy and are used by all forms of life. Plants and animals therefore compete for the same sources of fat, which provides a source of food and nutrition for each.

Many people believe that food is a ” Binary substance – either it is good or it is bad for you” (Walden). This belief is based on the false premise that “all food is alike”, when in fact, all food has both good and bad qualities. Humans are capable of making changes in the diet that will affect these two qualities. This means that while a healthy diet will provide most of the nutrients a human body needs, an unhealthy diet will have a negative impact on those same nutrients. Therefore, the best definition of real food is that it consists of the essential nourishment required to maintain the health and growth of an individual’s physical body and/or mind.
