The Importance Of Healthy Lifestyle To Overall Health And Well-Being

The definition of “health” has been subject to a tremendous amount of change over the years. In common usage, health is often equated with being well, young, and healthy, though other associations are more common, such as well-being, being in good shape, and living with a high quality of life. In fact, some modern definitions of health have evolved far beyond these old definitions. According to the World Health Organization, “health is a state of full physical, emotional and social well being and not simply the absence of illness and infirmity.” Various definitions have also been used over the years for various purposes.

Mental health refers to one’s ability to live his or her life well, and includes aspects related to self-respect, well-being, and attitude, but it is typically understood to include psychological aspects as well as physiological health. In general, health care concerns itself with the whole body, but often mental health and medical health issues are included in its treatments. A major portion of the population seeks treatment for a myriad of health issues, and in the US alone, there are an estimated 1.9 million admissions to specialty hospitals for treating a wide range of conditions. Mental health issues are among the most common of all health issues. As the population ages, more people are experiencing greater levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, which can have profound affects on their overall health, leading to an increasing need for health services.

People may not perceive their health status as having changed significantly over time, especially if the changes are subtle. But unless something drastic occurs, health status will likely continue to deteriorate, leading to significant problems such as increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, as well as increased costs for health care in the long run. Those who are diagnosed with chronic conditions are more likely to need health services in the future. Likewise, those who have experienced a traumatic event may also require additional assistance from specialists in the future as well. Thus, staying fit and healthy should be an ongoing goal, and adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet and regular exercise will help maintain good health status over the long term.
