Three Important Definements of Health

Health, according to the World Health Organization, is ‘a state of full physical, emotional and social well being and not just the absence of sickness and disease.’ Different definitions have been used over the years for different purposes. However, there is one common factor that all agree on: good health is vital to life itself. When one is healthy, they can go about their daily lives with the sense of calmness and contentment that only health can bring. It does not matter what your age is, being in good health is essential to living a satisfying life.

Mental health, or the ability to think and function normally in various situations, also contributes to a healthy physical environment. Being mentally healthy means that you have the ability to enjoy your relationships with other people, and you are capable of handling day-to-day stresses with a level head. Mental wellness also includes the capacity for taking reasonable risks, for exercising self-discipline, and for having reasonable expectations about the world around us. Having a sense of well-being contributes significantly to spiritual well-being, as well.

A physical environment that is free of disease, infection, and sickness has the potential to promote health and well-being in everyone who is present. Holistic health care recognizes that there are three separate but interconnected definitions of health: emotional, physical, and mental health. This definition refers to the interdependence of the three in promoting optimal health. The presence of these three important areas has serious consequences on your health and quality of life. Without having one or the other, your physical environment and your emotions will take over, and you may suffer from disease, infection, or illness instead of feeling well.
