What Do You Do As a Graphic Designer?

A designer is somebody who designs something before it’s even made, usually by sketching or planning the shape or form. In technical terms, a designer is also someone who designs something intangible, such as systems, products, processes, principles, games, images, services, laws, and so on. A designer usually considers aesthetics when creating art, but the process of actually coming up with the final design often involves a whole lot of other people. For example, if you’re working on a game, you’d probably need to hire a programmer or computer programmer, a designer, an artists, an audio engineer, a writers, a level designer, a soundsmith, and so on. Each of these different types of people will have a say in the final product, which is why it’s very important that you have as many people involved in the process as possible. Here are a few things about designing which applies to all of these different types of people and businesses.

The difference between a graphic designer and an art director is pretty easy to understand. While an art director makes the decisions about how the characters and scenes in the game will look, a graphic designer does everything else. They work with the writer, designer, and so on to come up with a finished product that looks good and is well-designed.

So now you know who a designer is and what they do. Next time you have a friend or acquaintance ask them, “What do you do?” or “How do you design?” You can bet that your friend will give you the same answer as they would to you if you told them you were a graphic designer (they wouldn’t – that’s a job for a different kind of person). If you want to be known as an artist that has talent in this particular field, you need to learn how to become a designer and market yourself properly. Learn the ins and outs of layout, composition, color, line, image editing, video production, and website development and you will be an instant hit.
