What Do Children Learn in School?

A school is an establishment, generally organized to offer learning spaces and learning environments specifically for the education of students. Generally, most developed countries have systems of public education, which may be mandatory. In such systems, students advance through a sequence of primary schools, which represent the initial learning experiences. They then progress to secondary schools which are specialized in a specific area of study.

After making the transition to secondary school, the young children move on to tertiary schools, which are even more specialized than the secondary school. tertiary instruction generally emphasizes preparation for higher education or career training. The most common areas of specialization that students may pursue after attaining a certificate or diploma from a primary school are medicine, law, veterinary science, education and nursing.

School instruction has changed a great deal over the past century, especially with the spread of the school system throughout the entire developed world. The education system of the United States was characterized by a preference for boys over girls, and a gender ratio of nearly 12 boys to every girl. However, in many countries and communities, especially those where the level of general education is very low, the ratio is closer to one hundred to one.
